PROJECT
Sheep Creek
Cascade County, Montana
About the Project
In July 2021 the Harris Mountain Fire swept through 30,000 acres south of Cascade, MT. The Sheep Creek Ranch was decimated by the fire. Due to the intensity of this blaze the native tree seed in the forests on the property were incinerated, which means that the conifer forest would not be able to naturally regenerate. In 2023 the landowner partnered with Mast Reforestation to reforest more than 2,500 acres. The project is being financed through the sale of carbon removal credits generated by the reforestation project. The reforested acres are held in a conservation easement for the next 200+ years.

Regional Impacts
Protecting Climate + Biodiversity
In addition to carbon removal, the project supports climate resilient forests that improve wildlife habitat and soil quality, further supporting the health of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The project is located in a critical wildlife corridor at high risk of subdivision that is home to species such as bighorn sheep, elk, moose, grizzly bears, mountain lions, wolves, bald eagles and more.
Healthy Communities
Healthy forests support healthy communities. The project will also create new economic opportunities for local communities through the creation of reforestation opportunities in seed collection, site preparation and seedling planting.
Continued Stewardship
The perpetual conservation easement will protect the land from development, logging, or subdivision for 200+ years of funded monitoring by an accredited land trust.
